In June 2024, Social Security FINALLY admitted that some of the jobs it has relied upon to deny disability benefits are do not exist in more than very small numbers. Under Social Security’s “Grid Rules”, a person applying for disability is “not disabled” at Step Five if they can perform jobs other than their Past Relevant Work. Social Security has relied upon the Dictionary of Occupation Titles, which was last updated in 1991, to list jobs that claimants could theoretically perform at “Step Five” and deny disability benefits. In June 2024, Social Security stated that over 100 jobs in the Dictionary of Occupational Titles can no longer be used to deny disability benefits because these jobs do not exist in more than very small numbers. Social Security also stated that 13 other jobs, including the commonly listed jobs of Addresser, Document Preparer, Surveillance-System Monitor and Nut Sorter, require additional evidence from a job expert in order to be used to deny disability benefits.
