Clients often ask “Will I receive health insurance if Social Security approves my disability claim?” Our clients frequently say that obtaining affordable health insurance is their most important goal in applying for disability. If you are approved for Social Security Disability, you can receive for Medicare Part B, which costs $174.70 in 2024. Social Security will deduct the monthly premiums from your disability check.
However, you must wait 29 months after the month in which Social Security determined that your disability began in order to receive Medicare. If you are approved for disability and potentially eligible for Medicare sometime in the past, you can receive backdated Medicare coverage. To do so, you choose to pay the Medicare premiums for those additional months to pay for prior medical care.
If you live in Georgia or South Carolina and are approved for Supplemental Security Income (SSI), you will be entitled to receive Medicaid. There is no cost or waiting period for Medicaid. If you are entitled to both Social Security Disability and SSI, you can receive both Medicare and Medicaid at the same time. |
